Hi! I'm Jeff Potter and I run this place. UpNorth is the love-child of the national local culture media empire, OYB (Out Your Backdoor), and hooks back to the motherlode for national topics.

Now, everybody knows about Michigan's pro sports, car factories, golf, jetskis, real estate, resorts, bars, concert venues, urban scenes and political worries---the major media and local tabloids cover all that endlessly.

But what about everything else? What about what regular people do for fun in a way that supports talented locals instead of corporations?

Michigan is full of amazing independent businesses and scenes. UpNorth brings them all together, giving them rare access to some regional-size general interest media for a change. There's no other place where Michigan's indy scenes all come together like this. At UpNorth you find folkfests with canoe races with huntin'n'fishin with good food. It's a big tent! Because most Michiganders live in a big-tent way!

UpNorth is full of personal stories and info that I pass along as I discover them. People pass things along to me all the time. Plus I don't travel very far anymore.
